Unbound

This past weekend Laura Falzon, Anna Tonna and Olga Gurevich performed Unbound, a concert of works by women composers for voice, flute and piano from the Age of Enlightenment to the 21st Century.

Women composers across history are too often overlooked and forgotten. Unbound set out to change that, celebrating music created by women, performed by women, featuring works from the 18th century to the present in different scorings (voice and piano, flute and piano, voice flute and piano and solo piano).

The programme was designed to feature women composers from across different countries and centuries, each exhibiting their own aesthetic interests, social background and goals.

Likewise, all three performers are also from different cultural backgrounds, coming together as residents of New York City, united in their interest and curiosity to explore repertoire that showcases new and exciting repertoire to a diverse public.

The concert took place on Sunday 16 March at the David Greer Hall Bloomingdale School of Music on 323 West 108th Street.

The programme included two world premieres. The world premiere of Rowing in Eden (2025, text by Emily Dickinson) composed by Margarita Zelenaia for voice, flute and piano, and the world premiere of the version for mezzo, flute and piano of  Portrait (valse chantée) (1904, text by Louise Perny) composed by Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944).
