Laura Falzon and Issa Sonus ensemble’s performance of Andrew Norman‘s Light Screens at Peter Norton Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia’s Concert Hall in New York City this December 9th has been featured in Schott Music’s EAM news.
“Andrew Norman’s Light Screens is heard on December 9 in a performance by flutist Laura Falzon’s ISSA Sonus Ensemble at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space in New York City. Scored for flute and string trio, the work takes as its main inspiration Frank Lloyd Wright’s stained glass window designs, which he termed “light screens.” These designs use simple shapes like the square and the rhombus in repetitive patterns, and they often feature a lively dynamic of asymmetry between areas of intense geometric activity and expanses of largely empty space. Upon completion of composing Light Screens, the composer also transcribed the work for string quartet, after which it was taken up by the Ives and Cassatt Quartets.
An ardent advocate and passionate performer of contemporary music, Laura Falzon has collaborated with composers from around the world on new works for flute in a variety of combinations, ranging from the conventional flute solo, flute & piano, and flute & orchestra, to works with electroacoustics as well as non-western instruments like the zheng, sitar, tabla, yoruba drums and tanpura. Falzon has held the position of co-principal flute with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Malta and her performances also include appearances with orchestras and ensembles such as London’s Spectrum, St. Martin in the Fields Sinfonia, the British Rasumovsky Quartet and the National Orchestra of Malta. Falzon is also active as a music educator and teaching artist and currently teaches at Columbia University.”
